The Slippery Year

My long weekend got extended by one more day due to a sprained back. Likely from not warming up properly for dance on Saturday. Maybe mum's right... Age really is catching up with me :(

And so I decided to take liberty of the fact that I have to do everything in slow motion and try to savor the very last of my long weekend before the crazy month(s) before my much anticipated honeymoon *shinyeyes*

The weekend had been well and enjoyable :) Pretty much like how I've envisioned it to be... But I was hoping to be slightly more productive. In any case, I still managed to rest, read, think, bake, go for a facial, danced (sprained my back), spend some time with the family and some lovey-dovey moments with pops :)

And we stumbled upon a book sale after our family dinner and came home with some new reads (haven't read a fiction book since my last one at Samui. Speaking of which, I'm trying to find the book "You Had Me at Woof").

This one book, in particular, resonated with me the moment I finished the synopsis. And by the time I hit page 20 just before bedtime last night, I almost felt like I'm the twin sister of the author (whose name is Dawn!). The Slippery Year is about the author's "meditation on Happily Ever After", about the feeling of having slipped away from life as you watch the days go by, and hoping to slip back in so that you can truly experience every moment of it. Even the mundanity of it or the lack of extremities.

I don't know if that made sense to you, but it sure hit home-run with me. Sometime I feel like I have too much on my mind, too much reflection, introspection and anticipation going on that I'm not living in the moment. I sometimes I even feel like I'm watching my life passing by (rest assure, I don't mean in a I've-been-smoking-wheat-out-of-body-experience kinda way).

Time has been flying right pass and I feel like I need to experience more of life. There is this sense of fulfillment that's been missing and I'm trying to figure that out... Or maybe it's the feeling of ennui.

But right now, I just want to slip back into life and learn to experience and appreciate what every moment brings. To live in the now.

God's Gift

"I asked God for strength, that I might achieve;
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked God for health, that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy;
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life;
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among men, most richly blessed."
- Prayer of an unknown soldier

Life, as it is.

Did a stay-home Sunday after lunch with mummy and pops.

Been busy rushing about the entire week - Staff B paper, Welfare handover, SWB handover, Networking Party, interviews... Almost couldn't fork out time to trim my fringe.

Glad to have a lovely lovely break for the whole of Saturday :) It's indulgence in every way ;)

But I was still so tired and unwell today that I missed church :(

I need to organize my life and instill some control and discipline in the different aspects of my life.

The past 23 years had been easy (albeit maybe not so enjoyable at times) because things have been planned for. We're just living by the schedule, following the timetable, going with the crowd, from one class to another, one term after another.

Working life can be the same - from one weekday to the next, one paycheck after another. And we can just let life pass us by without really achieving anything that we value as significant in our life. We can OT till the cow comes home or we can knock off on time to while the evenings away with pointless activities.

Couple of weeks ago, I was out for lunch w the usual gang and we popped by Starbucks to grab a cuppa b4 returning to the office. Saw a lady casually dressed in tee, shorts and slippers, enjoying the lazy afternoon sun with a book in her hand, music in her ears and occasional sips of iced cold frappe. How I wish I can do that on a Tuesday afternoon, how enjoyable is that!

Well, I CAN actually do that. If I want to. I can always take a day leave and do the same thing, go on a relaxing date with myself. It's so easy, I don't even have to plan! But time has become such a scarcity in life that I'm not sure I can convince myself to something so seemingly "useless".

I guess what's really important now is to regain my sense of control and discipline in life and organize the different aspects of it back into shape.

I need to get closer to God, learn to enjoy every moment with my loved ones, control my expenses, clear my (physical, mental and virtual) clutter regularly, experience new things, gain new knowledge and have a goal in life.

I need to find a balance in experiencing the individual moments in life through the smaller things and knowing in a larger scale, what exactly am I working towards in life. There are so many things I can engage in but I want to know what are the things that can lead me to become the person that I want to be. What may seem important or enjoyable at this very moment may just be something that is a complete waste of time or worse, something that is holding me back from arriving at my ultimate goal.

I once came across a story abt a rich business man who went to a little island to take a break from all the stress that he had been facing at work. Out on the beach during his vacation, he wanted to get a drink and after a long walk, he saw this man resting on a daybed with a cooler box filled with canned drinks next to him and a simple sign that says Drinks for $2. The rich business man bought a can of drink and sat down nxt to the drink seller. They started talking and the drink seller asked the business man why did he look so unhappy. The business man told him that he is thinking about his work and he is very tired with all the stress that he is facing.

"Why are u working so hard then? What are u trying to achieve?" the drink seller asked.
"Money. I want to be rich, really really rich."
"And what happens when u are really really rich? What are u going to do with all the money?"
"I'll sell away my business, buy a house on a little island near the beach, set up a little stall there and enjoy the sea breeze, the sun and the waters at my feet everyday."
"Well, that's exactly what I'm doing everyday!"

I guess what the business man wanted was not the money, but the experience of bliss in its simplicity. If he had realised exactly what is it that he wanted in life, he might have been able to enjoy such a lifestyle for a much longer time.

But life is never as simple as a story. And it doesn't help that human are simply complex (pardon the oxymoron). A short break probably won't help us feel recharged or change our perspective of life. It's the realisation that we get through spending more time with ourselves and understanding ourselves or the eureka moments that hit on us when we slow down to observe and experience life.

I'm glad to know that my life has been perfectly planned by God, and that all I need to do is really to listen to Him and find out where He wants me to go and what He wants me to do. Nothing is chance, everything that we encounter has it's purpose, be it good or bad, enjoyable or heart-wrenching. Through joy we learn to be thankful, through tears we learn to be faithful.

May the Lord grant me wisdom to see His plans and obedience to act in His will.

Fly me to the moon

Was listening to Fly Me To The Moon while walking home under the stars. How apt and how enjoyable :)

Went Prologue and Borders w pops and bought 2 new books. Already started reading one called Shoo, Jimmy Choo! A very comprehensive and useful read - financial education in the most chic-lit manner. Hope I complete the book and practice what was written religiously :P

Crazy week just past, end Aug will get even crazier.

But I'm still pretty determined to keep my work-life balance so that I can enjoy work as much as possible.

**abrupt stop due to closing eyelids**

Goodnight and enjoy ur weekend!!

Marvelous Monday

Never been a fan of Mondays, but I must say, today had been a great and eventful one :)

1) New colleague reported for work, and we both stay at AMK! Who knows, we might start bumping into each other on our way to work :D

2) Made a job offer to one of my candidates :) hope she'll be my 1st 'baby' :)

3) Hit rate for Panel was high today :))) and I realise I actually feel nervous for my candidates. And when they perform well for panel, I actually feel proud of them!

4) Was talking to one of the AC and he said he personally felt that psych is extremely relevant to HR and it'll be nice that HR start investing in psych ppl. He is the FIRST person who din ask me why I studied psych but chose to do HR.
And I really appreciate that :) because ppl who ask that qn made me feel like I'm betraying what I studied by doing sth 'not relavant' to psych and that HR is just a substitute. Worse are those who gave me a skeptical face aft I explained to them.
I can only say that psych is extremely versatile and it can be relevant to ANYTHING. So stop doubting my commitments!!

5) Back on a happy note, I had a lovely dinner with pops and spent a long time just sitting at the restaurant chatting. Great way to end a day :)))

Thank God for this beautiful day!!

Looking forward to (another) Daiso trip on Wed and Nat'l Day next Mon!! Not only is it public hol (slp w/o having to set alarm), it's also our 3rd yr anni <3 pops got me a purple Kate Spade wallet online :D
It's not the patent one, coz it turns out the patent one's only left with yellow, so I bought it for s'one else :) the new one is a zip-around long wallet made of goat hide (which he thinks is more suitable for me coz I'm super careless with my stuff and a patent one will turn ugly in my care aft 1wk). Now I spend my free time tracking whr in the US is my little wallet :) it's in TX btw!! Not in a hurry to get it, but will be nice to know that it has reached it's intermediate destination.

Oh and looking forward to payday on the 12th toooooo!!

Ok, this post was supposed to be short :| good nitey ppl!!

Sponsor a Child

After I settle down with my 1st job, there's one thing I really want to do.
Sth that I've been wanting to do since abt 5 years ago.
It's more than buying a branded bag for myself or getting a car.

I hope I can sponsor a child in the developing countries.
I hope I can share my blessings with the less fortunate, and help to give them a chance in doing great things for God.

Maybe you can adopt a child too, it's only about USD38/mth and you can make a whole life of difference for this kid.

Dear Father, as I sit here weary, tired and without energy, thank You for reminding me that I can always come to You and trade in my exhaustion for Your rejuvenation. I come to You today and ask that You would restore rest to my soul.

Results wise, I'm leaving it all to God coz I believe He has a plan for me. As long as I give my best shot at the opportunities that He provides me with :)

HTHT.

Had a HTHT with poppy late last night in the car.
Always glad to have opportunities like dat because it helps to clear the issues that we're having w the r/s or our lives as we talk to each other abt it and share our opinions towards them.

They say Pisceans are dreamers.
And it's not a quality everyone appreciates.
S'times I'm quite bothered by it too.
That's why I know I'm so fortunate to have someone who is willing to hear me out, and give me rational and practical opinions to the issues I'm facing.
One who is genuinely concerned abt me and hope that I get the best out of every experiences.

Last night ended with a sweet note and I feel extremely encouraged.
As if the road ahead is suddenly cleared and I feel less burdened.

:)

Thank you Poppy Pie... And thank you for tolerating my ill-mood and temperaments... I miss the old me too.. I'll try to find it back. definitely :)

Meeting Poppy in town ltr for a little break from CL and IRC.
And spend some quality time with each other.
No driving, just walking, hand-in-hand :)

Self-help.

I figured that my inexplicable low mood may be due to my unhealthy lifestyle.
I was talking to Sham and while we both feel extremely unmotivated to achieve anything at all this sem, I realised that not only do I feel unmotivated, I feel OLD, SLOW and LIFELESS.
So... I've decided to treat myself better :)
Hopefully it lifts my pseudo-depression and slows down my ageing process :X

Eating Habits:
- Drink 2 litres of water each day (4X my water bottle)
- Eat regularly (3 meals each day, must have breakfast but no supper)
- Eat fruits or drink fruit juice for both lunch and dinner
- Stop binging on tidbits and stop trying to finish a big bag of chips everytime I start on one

Sleeping Habits:
- Sleep not later than 2am (I'm taking baby steps, will try to work on that)
- Have proper Quiet Time with God and say my prayer before I slp
- Wake up not later than 9am
- Do not snooze more than twice

Self Care:
- Apply lip-balm ALWAYS
- Apply vaseline b4 sleeping
- Complete 3-step facial daily
- Mask weekly (thursday morning sounds good)
- Get a suitable shampoo
- Hair mask weekly
- ALWAYS dry my hair aft washing
- Shower with my puffy shower puff (bubbles are therapeutic too)
- Exfoliate weekly
- Moisturize 2X weekly (I am gng to have a hard time with this)
- STOP biting my nails
- Go "colourless" for a week aft a mth of nail polish
- No make-up unless necessary (esp when I stay in sch the whole day)
- Visit dentist at LEAST twice a yr (man I hate dis)

Working Habits:
- Take a short break from the screen aft every hr (look at Poppy if he's nearby, look at JD's photo when Pop's not ard :D )
- Take a break from readings after every 45 mins
- Take a longer break after every 1.5 hrs
- Try to work while disconnected if possible (when no research has to be done)
- Read actively and summarize readings so that revision will be loads easier
- Include all activities and plans in planner
- Plan wisely and follow wad is planned (do not be overly ambitious or over-slack)

Activities:
- Have a relaxing / fun day out weekly
- Family outing or go shopping / high-tea with mummy monthly (AT LEAST)
- Warm up properly b4 dance pracs
- Do mini-exercises at least 3 times each week for 5 mins

Finally and most importantly, always give thanks for the day and in prayer, commit the day to God with faith and peace :)

I didn't know MSN chats can be so therapeutic.

New Commitments.

My annual review post of 09 has been sitting in my draft folder for the longest time.
And I still have not managed to get it done.
I think I'll just do a brief summary of the commitments for the last year and the new ones for this year so as to get myself oriented to wad's gng on.

2009:
- Serving in church's Tuition Cell
- Dance (EMCC perf in March)
- Private tuition
- Chaotic Thrift
- Driving
- Honours year
- Internship
- Mission trip

2010:
- Cont' serving in Tuition Cell
- Dance (EMCC in end Feb)
- Final Sem
- Bringing CT to Bazaar
- Look for job
... to be cont'...

It's only been a week since the start of the sem and I'm starting to feel weary alrdy.
It's 3-4 readings for EACH mod everywk + assignments and presentations.
And I din get Counselling :( All thx to our very smart CORs system.
It's ok... I believe sth good's gonna come out of it yes :)

Haven't been feeling very appreciative of myself lately... (u noe wad I'm trying to say??)
Like... I'm constantly trying to be someone or attaining a certain expectation which I feel like I'm no whr near and it's not an awesome feeling.

This is when Carl Roger's theory comes to play:
Real self vs. Ideal self
"I am" vs. "I should"
And when they don't coincide or are very far apart, anxiety kicks in.

Sounds bad. But I know it's not gonna kill me so I'm gonna learn to commit my worries and doubts to God and find ways to reconcile my "selves".

The new week's gonna be exciting.
Promise :)
Cheerios ppl~~
