Van Gogh Alive

Finally went for the Van Gogh exhibition at the Artscience Museum today.

It's not a typical display of his art, but it serves to provide one with an introduction to this fascinating artist and a peep into his turbulent life.

I'm not an incredibly artistic person and I can't say I'm into art appreciation. But it doesn't take a genius to look at his art and understand it.

His paintings are simple, unpretentious, telling. It's not complex, but it doesn't seem to miss out the details. It's vibrant, yet u can sense the kind of solemness and solitude in it. It mixes the real and the surreal.

I guess far more than his paintings, it's his life that attracts me to him.

In his own eyes, he lived as a failure, a burden, alone. Tormented by mental illnesses, unappreciated. Little did he know, he is now one of the most famous impressionists that has ever lived.

Before he took his life at the age of 37, he barely sold 1 painting (out of a collection of 900 over) for 400 francs. And now, one of his most famous paintings, portrait of Dr Gachet, was one of the most expensive paintings ever sold at an auction. It went for US$82.5mil.

I've always wanted to hang one of his paintings at home.

Starry Night - Probably his most famous painting. Also marked the most intense period of his mental illness during his stay at an asylum in St Remy.

But we might end up getting one of his flower paintings instead... and guess which flower?
